Exercise: Red Team an AI Response

"Red teaming" means deliberately trying to find flaws. In this exercise, you'll apply that mindset to a pre-written AI response that contains five embedded problems.

Step 1The Scenario

You asked an AI: "I run a small independent bookshop in a UK market town. Sales have declined 15% over the past year. What strategy should I adopt to reverse this trend?"

The AI responded:

The decline you're experiencing is primarily driven by the rise of Amazon, which now controls 85% of all book sales in the UK. However, independent bookshops that adapt strategically can not only survive but thrive in this environment.

Your first priority should be to establish a strong online presence. Research consistently shows that businesses with e-commerce capabilities outperform those without, and since your competitors are online, you must be too. Invest in a professional e-commerce website with full catalogue listings, nationwide delivery, and competitive pricing. The bookshops that have grown in recent years — Waterstones being the prime example — have done so by matching online retailers on price and convenience.

Second, transform your shop into an experience destination. Host author events, reading groups, and literary workshops. Studies show that experiential retail increases customer spending by up to 40%. The key is to create reasons for people to visit that they cannot replicate online. Consider adding a cafe area — the combination of books and coffee has proven to be the most successful model for independent bookshops, with virtually all thriving independents now operating some form of food and drink offering.

Third, focus on curation over selection. You will never match Amazon on range, so don't try. Instead, position yourself as the expert curator — the place where every book on the shelf has been personally selected and recommended. This leverages the one advantage you have that Amazon cannot replicate: genuine human expertise and personal recommendation.

Finally, engage your local community through a loyalty programme and partnerships with local schools and businesses. Community-embedded bookshops show 25% higher retention rates than those that operate as standalone retail units. Your market town location is actually an advantage — these communities value local businesses and will support you if you give them reason to.

Implement these four pillars simultaneously, and you should expect to see sales stabilise within three months and return to growth within six.
